Plenary Presentation
The Three Decisions of Hans Wilsdorf Luck or Genius ?
Blair Chandler - OVWCCC Member
Hans Wilsdorf, the German-born founder of a watch-importing company in London, England, would go on to create what became the Rolex Watch Company—one of the most recognized names in the history of watchmaking.
This presentation explores the early life and career of Hans Wilsdorf and the development of the Rolex brand. I believe our members will find his story fascinating, as I certainly do.
The presentation is primarily historical, tracing the important decisions and developments that shaped Wilsdorf’s vision for the company. It also examines several of the technical innovations and patents that played a significant role in Rolex’s success.
Remarkably, many of the ideas and inventions introduced in these early years still define Rolex and its watches today.
The question at the heart of the presentation is a fascinating one: Were Wilsdorf’s three key decisions simply a matter of luck, or were they the result of extraordinary vision and genius?
